?CYG ET Empowers Guangdong’s First Flexible Smart Microgrid Demonstration Project

Recently, CYG ET Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "CYG ET"), a subsidiary of Changyuan Technology Group Ltd.(CYG), contributed to the commissioning of Guangdong’s first flexible smart micro-grid demonstration project, supporting the development of a green and intelligent rural micro-grid.

 

The project is located in Taolian Village, a model village under Guangdong Province’s hundred; thousand and ten thousandproject. It is a crucial part of the high-quality development area linking Nankunshan and Luofu Mountain towns. Upon completion, the project aims to address long power outages, poor voltage quality, and challenges in renewable energy integration in Taolian Village. It is expected to significantly enhance power supply reliability and voltage quality for the area's forest bath-style new rural demonstration zone, providing an effective energy solution for regions rich in clean energy and forest reserves. It represents a pioneering example of a green, smart micro-grid in rural settings.

 

Challenges in Power Supply Amidst Pristine Ecology

 

Taolian Village is situated about 90 kilometers north of Guangzhou’s city center, adjacent to Shimen National Forest Park, with a forest coverage rate of 70%. Despite its ecological advantages, the area faces power supply challenges. Power lines traverse dense forests and steep cliffs, complicating construction and maintenance. The village operates eight small hydro-power stations with highly variable loads, leading to frequent line faults, especially during the rainy season. Additionally, the intermittent nature of photovoltaic (PV) power generation puts further pressure on the grid, resulting in unstable voltage and frequent outages that affect residents' quality of life.

 

Smart Micro-grid: A Solution to Power Supply Challenges

 

A micro-grid is a localized small-scale power distribution system that integrates generation, consumption, storage, and control. The Taolian Village micro-grid project deployed seven energy storage systems at the grid's endpoint, integrating eight small hydro-power stations and 64 distributed PV systems. This created a smart micro-grid with water, solar, and storage multi-energy complementarity.

 

CYG ET provided key equipment for the project, including the PRS-3000 Energy Management System (EMS) and the PRS-3201M Micro-grid Central Controller, establishing a "super brain" for the micro-grid.

 

These systems enable automated monitoring and efficient operation of the microgrid in both grid-connected and islanded modes. Advanced sensing and fault topology recognition technologies ensure seamless switching between hydro-power, PV, and storage within seconds, essentially turning the village’s power supply into a flexible and efficient "super power bank."

 

Considering the area's high proportion of renewable energy, the project incorporated advanced technologies such as low-voltage flexible DC interconnection and precise traveling wave fault location. These innovations enhance the micro-grid's intelligence and responsiveness, reducing fault localization time to within seconds and narrowing maintenance areas from kilometers to meters, thereby significantly improving power supply stability and restoration efficiency.

 

Transforming Rural Power Supply: From "Challenge" to "Excellence"

 

The Taolian micro-grid project covers three administrative villages, including Taolian and Mishi, benefiting nearly 5,000 residents.

 

In 2023, the average annual power outage time in Taolian Village reached 103.2 minutes. After project completion, the outage time dropped to zero. In case of primary power source failure, the micro-grid can sustain power supply to the village for 4 to 6 hours, ensuring a stable green energy supply. Additionally, the micro-grid's voltage and frequency regulation enhances the region's capacity to integrate renewable energy, promoting efficient use of clean energy.

 

The project is a practical exploration of localized clean energy and innovative storage systems working together. The smart micro-grid not only improves power quality but also supports Taolian Village's industrial development.

 

As the core village of the Conghua Forest Bath-Style New Rural Demonstration Zone, Taolian Village is planning to develop agricultural tourism, cultural wellness, and leisure residential industries. Reliable and stable power supply injects vitality into these industries, enabling more rural residents to benefit from the positive changes brought by enhanced power infrastructure and contributing to the construction of a vibrant and beautiful rural community.
