CYG Herald

The "Herald" column highlights CYG's high-end innovations. It features R&D experts, delves into core technologies, and showcases CYG's strength in advanced fields through articles and short videos. With the brand ethos of "Passion for Innovation, Focus on the Frontier, and Professional Reliability," "Herald" embodies CYGs pioneering spirit, inviting you to enjoy a technological feast.

In traditional relay protection upgrade projects, conventional approaches often require sequential power shutdowns across different intervals, leading to extensive power outages, high construction risks, and extended project timelines. These challenges can hinder equipment upgrades and system management. Leveraging its strong technical foundation and extensive experience in power technology upgrades, CYG has developed an innovative live-upgrade platform. This platform aims to maintain uninterrupted primary equipment operation and preserve secondary functionality throughout the entire upgrade process. Real-time monitoring of operational status ensures seamless data integration. Notably, the platform supports compatibility with equipment from various manufacturers, facilitating the efficient replacement of aging grid equipment and contributing to a "Zero Perception" experience during substation protection upgrades.

Case Study 1:

Zhejiang Hangzhou 220kV Dalu Substation 35kV Bus Differential Upgrade Project

As Zhejiang Province’s first project to replace bus differential protection in a conventional substation without power outages, this initiative provided valuable insights for future retrofits of aging protection systems and established a solid foundation for project success. To ensure smooth execution, the project team worked closely with the client, setting up test scenarios on-site and conducting factory validation ahead of time. Comprehensive planning covered everything from construction scheduling and on-site safety management to rigorous verification of safety measures, logic testing, current loop short-circuiting, and circuit calibration. Each step was meticulously reviewed, and detailed risk management protocols were put in place to effectively mitigate potential risks.

The complexity of the bus differential protection system presented a significant challenge. Traditional methods typically required a wide power outage and a construction period of up to 15 days, disrupting normal substation operations and delaying the modernization of outdated protection systems. To address this, the project adopted an innovative "retrofitting with existing equipment" approach using a single-device replacement strategy:

Standardized Design: Integrated a PCB board into the adapter box to standardize terminal and circuit design.

Seamless Compatibility: Ensured compatibility between the existing and new devices.

Convenient Connection: Utilized the "retrofitting" technology to maintain the external circuit's integrity, enabling a non-disruptive, one-time power-free upgrade.

As a result, the project duration was significantly reduced from 15 days to 3 days, improving operational efficiency and system reliability while minimizing construction risks and the impact of power outages.

Case Study 2:

Shanxi 110kV Substation Non-Power-Outage Upgrade Project

Since its commissioning in 2003, this substation in Shanxi has played a critical role in supplying power to local industrial and agricultural sectors. However, after more than a decade of service, aging switch-gear and protection devices became a pressing issue. Traditional upgrade methods would have required coordinated power shutdowns, disrupting local production and everyday life.

Using CYG's 10kV switch-gear non-power-outage platform, the project team implemented temporary protection during the upgrade, ensuring no primary power interruptions. High-precision monitoring and data acquisition technologies enabled real-time supervision of equipment replacement, installation, commissioning, and data synchronization. The platform's support for multi-vendor equipment through standardized module interfaces and intelligent adaptation technology allowed for seamless compatibility. Before implementation, the team conducted thorough site inspections, laboratory simulations, and pre-installation testing to manage risks effectively and ensure precise and safe project execution.

These two case studies highlight a novel approach to power equipment upgrades, achieving a nearly imperceptible "Zero Perception" live upgrade experience. By focusing on minimizing inconvenience to clients through technological innovation, the projects maintained grid stability and offered reliable power supply assurance. As this technology continues to evolve and be adopted, it is expected to contribute to the digital transformation and intelligent advancement of power grids, supporting the development of a safer, more efficient, and sustainable modern power infrastructure.
